MACHEALA BROCK
Playwright | COSTUME & SCENIC Designer
ABOUT ME
Macheala Brock (she/her) is a Saint Louis-based playwright, costume and scenic designer studying at Webster University’s Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts. Among her most formative design experiences, Macheala acted as costume design intern for New York-based costume designer Tina McCartney on the world premiere of Summer Stock at Goodspeed Musicals starring Danielle Wade and Corbin Bleu. At university Macheala has had the opportunity to design for productions including costume designing Blood at the Root in addition to scenic design for Sueño and Silence.
As a playwright, Macheala weaves social commentary with psychological depth, incorporating elements of genre to provoke thought and ignite meaningful dialogue around the complexities of race, identity, trauma, and fear. During her time at Webster, she has seen one of her ten-minute plays, Thanksgiving: Your House or Mine?, produced as well as held a reading for an original one-act. In her current work as a writer, she is interested in work rooted in family that centers intergenerational patterns. Most recently, Macheala wrote Descent which features a Nigerian-American family as they reckon with questions of historical and familial responsibility when an outsider’s presence forces the issue of their ancestry.
