ABOUT ME
Macheala Brock (she/her) is a playwright, costume designer, and scenic designer currently based in Saint Louis, MO as she finishes her studies at Webster University’s Sargent Conservatory of Theatre Arts. She has had several formative design experiences, including serving as the costume design intern for New York-based designer Tina McCartney during the world premiere of Summer Stock at Goodspeed Musicals, which starred Danielle Wade and Corbin Bleu. Macheala’s design portfolio includes costume design for Dominique Morisseau’s Blood at the Root and scenic design for Sueño by José Rivera and Moira Buffini’s Silence. She is currently working as the assistant costume designer to Dottie Marshall Englis on the upcoming production of Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood at the Repertory Theatre of Saint Louis.
As a playwright, Macheala’s work often explores themes of family and intergenerational dynamics. Her ten-minute play Thanksgiving: Your House or Mine was produced by the Sargent Conservatory, and her one-act play Lights, which delves into race-based anxiety in the context of police brutality, was given a reading at the Conservatory. Her most recent play, Descent, tells the story of a Nigerian-American family grappling with issues of historical and familial responsibility when an outsider’s presence forces them to confront their ancestry.
